Today, CBD is being administered for dogs and cats as well, because this compound has produced quite a lot of positive results in humans. Cannabidiol, also known as CBD or CBD oil, is a non-psychoactive chemical compound that is extracted from the Cannabis sativa plant.
You should never confuse CBD with THC (tetrahydrocannabinol), another compound that is extracted from the same plant. THC contains psychoactive properties, and it can make you feel intoxicated. Therefore, it is banned in many countries. CBD, on the contrary, doesn’t make you feel stoned. It has quite a lot of antioxidants and anti-inflammatory properties that work amazingly well for reducing pain, inflammations and stress.
While you may find the positive benefits of CBD for pets while doing your research, you may not find enough information about the dosage. It is the same for humans as well. Mostly, experts will tell you that you have to start with a minimal dosage first, before proceeding to increase the dosage after seeing your dog’s reaction to the same. However, what is the minimum dosage that you should try first? Is there a relationship between the dosage of CBD and the weight of the dog? Keep reading to find answers to these questions:
Rule for CBD dosage for dogs
When in doubt about the CBD dosage, you should always follow this golden rule – 1.5mg of CBD is the base dosage for every 1o pounds of the weight of your dog. So if your dog weighs about 10 pounds, you can start with a minimum dose of 1mg of CBD.
You can continue with the same dosage for about a week, before slowly increasing it to 3mg. After a week, you can increase it to 5mg also, if your dogs experience acute pain or anxiety issues. Before increasing the dosage, please check with your vet to know if it is safe to do so.
This dosage will correspondingly increase as per the weight of your dogs. For example, for a 70-pound dog, you can start with a low dose of 7mg, before increasing it gradually to 16mg and even 35mg, if your dog reacts well to the increased intake.
How frequently should you administer CBD to dogs in a day?
While giving CBD to your dogs for immense pain and stress/anxiety issues, it is highly recommended that you administer CBD once every 8 hours to give them relief from their ailments. Usually, it is enough if you administer CBD once or twice a day to your pets. Your vet is the best person to advise you on the dosage and frequency of administration, after assessing your pet’s weight and current ailments.
How long to wait for results?
Regardless of the form of CBD you administer to your dogs, you can expect to see results within 30 to 60 minutes. You can wait until a maximum of 2 hours to see if the CBD dosage has brought about any changes. If no change is noticed, you can increase the dosage slightly, after checking your vet. Sometimes, your vet may ask you to wait for a week to observe your dog carefully for side effects, if any, before increasing the dosage.
