5 Factors That Play A Major Role While Growing Indoor Plants

Do you have a strong desire to grow a garden but not able to start because of unavailability of space?

Don’t worry, if you don’t have enough backyard space, you can grow plants indoor.

Yes, it is possible. Growing plants indoor not only cleanses air of your house, but also enhances the
aesthetics of your house. And if you are thinking of growing vegetable, then this is more beneficial as it will provide you with organic food.

Plants usually don’t require much space. It can be grown with as little space as windowsill. Some people also use indoor space for growing some plants, which they will eventually transfer it to outdoor, upon arrival of spring.

However, there are several factors that needs consideration while growing plants indoor. When all these factors are in right condition, it ensures healthy growth of plants in the indoor garden. Five such key factors are mention below:

1. Space
According to your available space in your house, your plants will grow. Whether you give little
space or lot of space, your plants will fit accordingly, if all other requirements are fulfilled.
Various kinds of plants can be grown in a very small space, for example a table or windowsill. If you are thinking of setting up a large garden, then you can arrange a separate room with bench,
shelves etc. Basically, a place with tile flooring is more good for catching water drops falling
from plants or you can also put a tarp under the table. Shelves provides large area for planting
with itself occupying very small space.

2. Light
Light is another important factor that plays a vital role in indoor growing. They help in seed
germinating and are perfect for growing light loving houseplants. Selecting a perfect indoor lighting system helps the plant to grow healthy. Different plants have different requirement of
lights that is based on following factors:
–  Wavelength-Sunlight possess full spectrum of light and plants use this full spectrum light for
photosynthesis. Therefore, choosing a full spectrum light is very important.
– Intensity-Then another important factor about light is the intensity, which is measured by the
watt voltage of the bulb and distance between plant and light source. Different plants require
different light intensity, so accordingly you must select.
– Duration-All plants require some dark period during which they respire, which is also a very
important process for their growth. There are different types of plants like short day plants,
which requires less than 12 hours of light, some are long day plants, that require 14-18 hours of
light, and some are day-neutral plants and they require 8-12 hours of light.

So according to need of plants grow lights are set.

3. Choosing a grow light
A variety of grow lights are available and it is quite difficult to choose the right one for growing
your indoor plants. Some common types of grow light are:
– Incandescent lamps-These grow lights you can get in a nursery or hardware store and
the cost is very low. Though, they support some indoor plants but cannot fulfill all
– Fluorescent light-These type of grow lights is suitable for plants that doesn’t require
much amount of light. Some examples are herbs and other such plants. But it is not
suitable for flowering and budding plants. They are not much expensive and are
available at local garden supply or hardware store.
– High-Intensity Discharge(HID)Lights-These grow light is one of the most efficient and
brightest grow light but little expensive. One 1000-watt HID light is similar to 50
fluorescent lights of 40 watt. These bulbs are of different types mercury vapor, metal
halide, high pressure sodium, low pressure sodium. Among this metal halide and high-
pressure sodium is used for indoor growing of plants.
–  Full spectrum LED light-These grow light is in high demand now-a- days. It is highly
efficient and durable. It contains no mercury, lead gas or filament. It contains no parts
that is prone to failure, for which it last very long. It consumes very less energy. Besides,
this light emits full spectrum light similar to sunlight, therefore it has more effect on
growth of plants. Different plants require different wavelength of light for growth, and
LEDs is a full spectrum grow light, therefore it is has best effect on growth of indoor

4. Temperature
Another important factor for growing plants indoor is the temperature of the environment. It
has high effect on quality and quantity of growing plants. Temperature also affects in following
– High impact on plant photosynthesis
– Seed germination
– Development of fruit and flowers.
Most of the plants grow well in a temperature between 65-75 degree F. If temperature is
below required range then it adversely affects efficiency and leads to low quality outputs. In the
other hand if temperature increases above required range, then it slows growth and can lead to
yellowing of leaves. So, according to the requirement of plants, temperature should be

5. Humidity
In indoor growing, humidity percentage in air also plays a major role. Lack of humidity can lead
to brown leaves, withered plants, leaf loss. Similarly, more humidity levels can lead to several
diseases. For maintaining proper humidity you must follow certain steps:
– Regularly mist your plants.
– For keeping the air humid, you can keep a tray filled with water near garden.
– Use a humidifier.
– You can also use a environment controller that will maintain proper humidity according
to requirement.

Although these above five factors play a major role in indoor growing but there are also several
other factors that has effects on growth of plants. With right implementation of all factors, you
can successfully set up your indoor garden and see your plants flourishing.
